Earthships Provide Alternative to Traditional Housing

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

If you’ve never seen an earthship they are something to behold.  If you’ve never been in one, you are missing a real treat.   Earthships are an alternative to traditional housing that makes the absolute most of everything.

I first became familiar with Earthships last spring when I visited a community just outside Taos, NM. They are the model of sustainable technology with minimal impact on the earth. Recycling all sorts of things is a common theme, from the tires in the walls, to glass bottles, even to the water that is used over and again before it is sent into a drain field. What started out as a brilliant idea is slowly gaining in popularity as we realize the world can no longer sustain at our current pace the lifestyles to which we have become accustomed. If you have a chance to visit an Earthship, you’ll be in for a real eye-opener.
