Writing Advice from Someone Who Uses It ~ Chelle Cordero

Where are you from?  I was born and raised in ‘da Bronx’-the only NYC borough to start with a “D” ;>

What is your writing name? Chelle Cordero

How long have you been seriously writing? I have been seriously freelance writing (aka, trying to make money at it) since 1981; I’ve done mostly non-fiction articles for newspapers and magazines, but I always wanted to ‘grow up and be a novelist’.

How many hours a day do you spend working on your stories? It varies depending on other deadlines and how creative I am feeling in a particular day. But when I am really into a story I can sit for hours and not even realize how much time has passed.
What is your self-editing process? Basically I will write a scene or two and connect them to other scenes-after a short while I have a chapter or two and I quickly browse it for any errors that stand out. But I don’t really do any detailed editing until I pretty much have the whole book done.

What was the best piece of advice you were given in regards to your writing? Write what you would want to read. Write naturally. And write.

What’s your favorite genre to write in? Why? Romantic suspense, not quite erotica but definitely heated. I love the idea of being in love and exploring that love - I also love a good mystery to solve. Since my two favorite choices of reading material are love stories and suspense, I am writing what I want to read.

How do you avoid interruptions? I don’t. Interruptions actually keep my brain moving - there is nothing like having to suddenly change directions on a writing project because of another editor calling or another interview subject suddenly being available to jolt the brain.

What piece of advice would you give to aspiring writers? Don’t be afraid to BE a writer. Say you are a writer, hang out with other writers (online or in person) and WRITE.

What do you do to refill your creative well? I read anything and everything. It’s like input in - input out, except it’s words in and words out.

Who do you model your heroes after? I take traits (just one or two) from various people - if my character is basically a good person, then I take traits of people I admire, etc. LOL, every sexy hero has at least one or two traits (some good, some frustrating as h*ll) of my husband.

And just for fun, what or who is your favorite:

Drink:  I rarely drink alcohol so a good old fashioned Vanilla Milk Shake suits me.
Movie: There’s a few, I will always watch Gone With the Wind, True Lies, The Pacifier, and most disaster movies about earthquakes and  tornadoes.
Book:  I recently read Once Again, Now by Charmaine Gordon and it is just staying with me.
Color:  All the colors of the rainbow - btw, I LOVE rainbows..
Holiday:  Passover
Season : Spring because it is a season of renewal.
Saying: “Thunder’s just a noise, boys; lightning does the work.” (song sung by Chad Brock)
