Best Reality T.V. Series
I’m thinking the best reality television series just may be The Biggest Loser, or its spin-offs.
Why?
I can’t help but think that every person selected to be a part of the series is a winner to begin with just by being brave enough to be in front of the cameras, knowing that you don’t look your best, but willing to try, probably yet again, to lose the weight that you know is making you unhealthy.
This is no mean feat as many of you know. Losing weight is a lifelong commitment to being conscious of what you put in your mouth. Recently I saw on television it’s not even the calories that count. There are a lot of people who eat the right amount of calories, but not the right kinds of food.
Remember the food pyramid when we were in school…the one drilled into us with the starches at the bottom then moving up until at the peak were nuts and foods with oil and fat in them…maybe it was the darn pyramid that taught us incorrectly, or perhaps even it was our failure to understand the relationship between all those foods and what portions meant what.
All I know is that we eat too much starch/carbohydrates and not enough fruits and vegetables to get the right nutrients into our system.
If losing weight is your New Year’s Resolution, you might consider buddying up with someone to hold you accountable. Have a plan together for how long you are going to work at the goal. In fact be SMART about it. Make your goal specific…I will lose 20 pounds. Make it measurable…know your starting and goal’s end weight. Make it realistic…you shouldn’t be planning on losing 20 pounds in a week. Set a time limit…I will lose 20 pounds over the next four months.Â
Portion control and good nutrition aren’t all it takes to lose weight. You need to move your body. In today’s society of sitting at desks with computers we don’t move enough. We need to sit up straight, we need to get outside and walk. Thirty minutes a day five days a week and the thirty minutes doesn’t have to be all at once.
This year I am going to dedicate myself to yard and gardening work a minimum of ten minutes a day; I am going to dedicate myself to stretching and strengthening my muscles ten minutes a day, and I am going to walk on the bike path behind my home ten minutes a day.
I am going to track this by putting stars on my calendar, once for each activity I do. If I don’t get all those things in every day, I am not going to beat myself up. I am going to give myself a positive self-talk so I can get back at it again tomorrow.
What about you? What will you do to improve your life and become healtier?
And three cheers to the sincere contestants on The Biggest Loser!

I find that making a huge pot of soup with all those green veggies plus some potatoes (both sweet and white) and fat free chicken broth helps any weight loss program. Plus it helps to detox the system. Also, plenty of water and green tea during the day. And of course exercising, even if it’s only 15 minutes at a time. I have an air climber and love getting on that thing several a day while watching either People’s Court, Ellen Degeneres or Oprah. You’d be surprise at the work out you can get. And since I just found out my 45th high school reunion is this year, that’s enough of a motivation for me to get in better shape.

Wow, I don’t know what to comment on first…the soup which sounds great or the fact that you are up for your 45th reunion!
I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised. I’m headed toward my 33rd graduation anniversary.
I do have to say I’ve been delighted at what reducing the amount of bread I eat has done for my blood sugars. Nothing short of amazing. A little extra protein, a little less starch. Wow.
I wouldn’t mind hearing more about your exercise device.
